Number 4 in Disco Deviant's ' Commercially Viable' Popcast series comes from none other than South London disco don Tony Johns. He's turned in a great mix for us featuring a lot of his own excellent edits. Plenty of classic stuff, a real 80's & 90's feel to it with some Reggae and even the odd contemporary surprise thrown in there.

Commercially Viable : Popcast #2 - Bill Brewster

No. 2 in the Commercially Viable series comes from none other than Bill Brewster (DJ History / Lowlife)
As well as kindly agreeing to put a mix together for us he also suggested we call these mixes 'Popcasts' - Sounds good to me!
'Everything on this mix was either a hit, from a hit album or by a commercially successful artist.'
Distinctly 70's feel to this one - I picked out Alexia Vassiliou, Lulu, Leo Sayer & Demis Roussos pretty easily but unsure on a few of the American artists ID. Give it a listen and see what you come up with.

Tune of the week: Safe With You (Marcus Marr remix) - Jacques Lu Cont & Alex Metric

Not too keen on the original version of this tune but Marcus has smashed it out the park with this remix, so good. Huge Techy workout with all sorts of percussion and sonic trickery keeping you entertain throughout. Packed full of musicality and hanging drunkenly from one of the biggest pulsating basslines  I've heard since Maxxi's remix of Shopping Cart.

HUGE! Turn this up on a proper pair of speakers or headphones, laptop  won't work for this one

FREE TRACK FROM DELAYED AUDIO

Nice 4/4 freebie up for grabs over on soundcloud. You have to like their FB page in order to access the download, but that's fair enough I suppose.

Apparently there is another freebie due next week too so keep your eyes open.

This is all part of the build up to EP 3 which comes out on vinyl on Nov 11th featuring tracks from James Johnston, DJ Rocca, Espada and Latona.

Commercially Viable podcast series - kicks off with Pablo Contraband

Disco Deviant's 'Commercially Viable' challenge was quite simply to put a selection of well known artists and tracks that fall pretty much into the commercial category, without selling out. An air of credibility is crucial for this as we are inviting some pretty well known DJ's to give it a go.

Here's the tracklist from #1

Controversy - Prince (aka Do I Believe in God -- LNTG)
Once in Lifetime - Talking Heads (Gigamesh mix)
Sign of the Times - Prince (aka Signs - WiLDCATS)
Nothing Going On But The Rent - Gwen Guthrie (Dino Lenny 2013 cover)
Sing it Back - Moloko (Mousse T Feel Love mix)
What A Difference Your Love Makes - Basement Jaxx (Miguel Campbell mix)
You Make Lovin Fun - Fleetwood Mac (Trail mix)

Harvey on XFM - London Xpress show - 22.12.01

Good friend of mine Dom Tuck seems to have been raiding his Mini-Disc archives from the turn of the millenium, good news is he's unearthed some absolute beauties and has started sharing them very quietly and without a fuss over on his Mixcloud.

Get on this one - none other than DJ Harvey during the London Xpress era on XFM. They used to hold some killer parties at The Leopard on Sunday afternons featuring amongst others, Harvey, Weatherall and Rocky & Diesel.

More to come from this series. Enjoy

Disco Deviant Promote Diversity Special: No Crime, No Punishment - Friday 6th September, Audio, Brighton

House music sure isn’t the answer to everything but when Disco Deviant’s Pablo Contraband and DJ Kate Wildblood and artist Karol Michalec of Brighton Supports LGBT Russia got talking about the abominable situation Putin’s anti-gay propaganda laws are creating in Russia today, they knew they wanted to do something in Brighton clubland to help create awareness and raise much needed campaigning funds for All Out. Alongside nightclubs across the globe including Berlin’s Berghain, New York’s Output and Munich’s Harry Klein, Disco Deviant’s Promote Diversity Special: No Crime No Punishment will be making a defiant noise courtesy of some of clubland’s finest DJs including global superstar and Big Love head honcho Seamus Haji, Southern Fried and Up Yours wonder Hifi Sean and Jon Pleased Wimmin, whose ventures at clubs including Taboo, Sacrosanct, the Mud Club, Pushca, Back To Basics and Miss Moneypennies have made him a true clubland legend.

Disco Deviant’s Promote Diversity Special: No Crime No Punishment will be an All Out fundraiser, delivering a club night where regardless of who you love, you too can stand beside the Russian LGBT community and say ‘nyet’ to the anti-gay legalisation, ‘nyet’ to hate crimes, nyet to gay teen suicides and nyet to Putin. Its time four to the floor showed homophobia the door.

‘As a gay man I feel duty bound to bring these Draconian goings-on in Russia to people's attention. It's easy for us in the West to take our equality and progress for granted. The world simply mustn't be allowed to move backwards.’ Jon Pleased Wimmin

‘I am getting involved with Disco Deviant’s Promote Diversity Fundraiser simply because human rights are being attacked in Russia in an immoral and barbaric way, right now, in the year 2013. If we don't do something now and make our voices heard then what future lies ahead of us all?’ Hifi Sean

"I'm amazed that in this day and age gay people are still fighting for equal rights. I've played all over Russia for many years and the people I've come into contact with have never appeared to be anti gay and in fact, many of the clubs are mixed so there's a strong gay element. Mixing with the new generation in the music world I find they are fortunately much more open minded than some of the older generation or more conservative, younger generation. Music has always brought people together and knocked down barriers so I am very honoured to be asked to play in support of the protest" Seamus Haji

Donna Summer; 1 year anniversary

It's hard to believe it but a year has gone since Donna Summer passed. Her vocals and music live on and continue to light up the lives of many and I Feel Love still manages to create quite a stir on the dancefloor.

I just found this edit of Love to Love and I must say it's an exceptional piece of work. The perfect way to remember and celebrate Donna today. Enjoy

Disco Deviant: Late Nite Tuff Guy, Rayko & Pablo Contraband at The Loft, Brighton on June 1st

Australia's Cam Bianchetti had already established himself as a bit of a legend on the Techno circuit many moons ago as DJ HMC.

However his recent incarnation as Late Nite Tuff Guy, a disco centric editor and DJ has captured the attention and imagination of many and the news has travelled far and wide. He continues to gain fans via his Soundcloud which bears testament to his prolific production rate.

He has been somewhat selective with his releases and keeps much of his work back for his own DJ sets and to share with a select few; Greg Wilson has been a big fan of his work for a while and his sets often feature a handful of Late Nite Tuff Guy tracks.

Speaking recently to RA, Greg neatly summed up his skills as a producer; "Cam has the knack of picking the right track to edit, which is an ability you've either got or you haven't—an instinctive thing, not a learnt one, he knows how to take something from the past and put a contemporary spin on it, making it more DJ-friendly in a modern context, without losing the essence of the original version, which was what made it a great track in the first place." - Greg Wilson

Disco Deviant has the pleasure of hosting LNTG's UK debut in Brighton on Saturday June 1st - which also marks the start of a three month European Tour for LNTG.

Also on the bill another leading light of the modern disco scene; Rayko will be flying in from Madrid for the occasion, before commencing a tour of Asia, a further continuation of his Worldwide Boogie Crusade.

Disco Deviant's very own Pablo Contraband will be putting his own slant on the dancefloor with the disco-house hybrid he has become known for.

The scene is set for another excellent night under the disco ball in sunny Brighton. Tickets are £10 each available from Resident Advisor & Ran$om Note

March and Easter Disco Deviant Party schedule

A veritable feast of parties lined up to get Springtime started in fine style. Rather than go into long winded descriptive stuff right now, I'm just gonna keep it simple - all ticket links are included.

First off this Friday 15th March we have the lovely Climbers heading over from Mexicali for their Disco Deviant debut, they'll be bringing their sultry brand of deep house along to light up the dancefloor and get us all hot and bothered in the process. Tickets are £7 a pop / 10 Below, Ship Street Fri 15th March - (Ticket link)

On Good Friday (29 March) we have our first ever boat party on the Thames. We have hired a boat and a funktion one rig and christened her Disco Deviant Easter Bonnet Boat Party. She casts off at 7pm from Lambeth Pier (don't be late) - Best bonnets win prizes (Meat & Chocolate!) This is ticket only and we're limited to 120 so don't snooze, there are only 30 tickets left. (ticket links)

Easter Sunday Ben & I are at Kitchen Pass at Coalition, Brighton - We're hosting room 2 and have some guest list for this, so if you are game let me know - should be a lot of fun. Tickets for what will be a massive night are now live - Greg Wilson, Fingerman & Pablo Contraband - Friday April 19th / The Loft, Brighton - (Ticket link) - these sell out, you know this. Don't be the one that misses out :(

New Jackson - Sat Around Here Waiting

Great new release on Hivern Discs from Dublin's New Jackson here. The original is infectious as hell. Massive grower alert.

Spike - Orange Cloud Nine

I haven't been able to stop listening to this since grabbing a copy a few weeks ago. The release is a full album of old material from Dutch artist Spike, who privately released a handful of albums in the early 80's. Sounding like the Eagles nicked some acid and then teamed up with The Alan Parsons Project for a fucked up studio session, it's a great collection of off kilter, trippy songs that keep the interest going by combining bitter sweet melodies and enchanting guitar work with some more darker and psychedelic twist and turns. A full release is planned soon.

There aren't many sound clips out there yet but there are quite a few bits off the album to be found on the excellent Golf Channel RA Mix from a few years back. A great listen that features a load of other Golf Channels tracks that we love.

You can download it here.

Delayed Audio EP 2

Delayed Audio follow up their debut release with another standout multi artist EP featuring music from Ejeca & Chamboche, Last Moon, Ste Waite & Anthony Mansfield…

Brighton based Delayed Audio kick started in October last year with a brilliant various artist EP featuring quality, deep electronic music from the likes of Chamboche, Session 9 & Last Mood. The record had a superb reaction with DJs such as Huxley, Norm Talley, Matt Tolfrey & James Teej all getting behind it and Mixmag describing Delayed Audio as a ‘New label to watch”.

Now the label team of Richard Harmer & Paul Budd are ready to get the new year firing with the next chapter in the Delayed EP series featuring another 3 original gems and a sterling remix.

The record kicks off with a collaborative piece from producers Ejeca & Chamboche who deliver the excellent ‘Keep the Love’, a delightfully soulful slice of house that fuses elements of disco, garage, jazz and a whole lot more to create a real winner, sublime stuff.

Next up we have Session9, who drops the superb ‘Sequence in Time’, a Chicago influenced old school house workout that is as hypnotic and emotive as you could wish for! The original version is backed up by a remix from US producer Anthony Mansfield who turns in a spacious and brooding mix that is full of intensity.
Finally Ste Waite steps up with ‘Chasing Drops’ a skipping and shuffling deep house affair that utilizes deft musical touches to create an engaging record with real character.

With this second EP, Delayed Audio have reaffirmed their undoubted position as a label to keep a close eye on, enjoy!

We will be celebrating the release with Ejeca and Delayed Audio at Warehouse, Audio Brighton on Saturday 23 February

Disco Deviant podcast #3: Get down Edits

Irish duo Martin & Daz aka Get Down Edits have been on our radar for a while at disco Deviant. Their DJ mixes have been consistently good and when we realised they had a label too we started to buy their releases and chat online via soundcloud. They are going from strengthe to dtrength with guest slots around Europe coming in alongside their Dublin residencies. A natural choice for our podcast series and this mix features some fine selections, as usual programed very well. Enjoy!

Laid Back - It's The Way You Do It (Velvet Spike Mix)

Great bit of 80's tackle here from Danish rockers Laid Back.

Probably best known best known for the hits 'Sunshine Reggae' and 'Baker Man', 'It's the Way You Do It' was the B Side to 1985's lesser known single 'One Life'. The Velvet Spike Remix does the trick here (Velvet Spike being the moniker of one Mr Shep Pettibone) turning this into balearic dance floor gold.

The Soul Clap remix of 'Baker Man' is well worth a tickle too.....

Crazy P - Wolf & Lamb feat. Slow Hands Mix

Great remix package here from 2020 Vision from the Crazy P Remixes album. The package features remixes from Maurice Fulton, Bonar Bradberry, and Huxley to name a few.

NYC's Wolf + Lamb feat. Slow Hands is the one doing the business for me with their re-rub of 'We Can Only Be Who We Are’. It's emotive guitar licks, subtle bass and enchanting vocal hook setting the tone for sunsets across the globe in 2013. Stunning.

I didn't realise that the Slow Hands Mix of Sandro Perri's 'The Drums' had been given a digital release after dropping on wax last summer. Well worth checking out if you haven't already. Summer is on it's way kids. Believe the hype.

Ears Have Eyes Recordings

Bit of DD love here for good friends of mine Joe Brooke-Smith and Miles Davies. Having thrown their under-the-radar Ears Have Eyes parties in East London over the last 3 years, they have made the jump into the world of label ownership with the creation of 'Ears Have Eyes Recordings'.

The focus for the label is not to put out a prolific selection of throwaway releases to blend in with the crowds but to deliver cherished pieces of music crafted by artists who believe in what they do. "Whether it be post punk, dub-disco, acid folk or warm analogue house the mission is to create a string of releases infused with love, character and personality".

The first release more than achieves this and comes in the form of a lovely little 10" vinyl and digital  release featuring post-punk outfit 'Snapped Ankles'. Lead track 'True Ecology (shit everywhere)' is post punk stomper with bags of energy. Bloody infectious too. The flip see's Joe and Miles work their magic with their 'Fools Mix', shunting the track back into more familiar dance floor territory with a dubbed out disco/house feel.

Both the lead track and the remix are working the magic here. Really good stuff. My vinyl arrived with a hand written note signed by a certain Mr Terry Wogan too. I can't confirm or deny if this was the man himself but it'll do until I'm informed otherwise. If it's good enough for Tel.........
