New Years Eve, Brighton and Hove - Free Party
As always, there's a list of options as long as your arm for New Years Eve. But, for those of you who are still undecided and fed up with the usual anti-climax, here is your alternative.
Nomads is nice little restaurant on George St, in the centre of Hove, which has been given over to us for the night.
It's an intimate venue, with loads of character, making it the perfect setting for us to get in a nice soundsystem, top djs, and ...provide the setting for you to get your groove on.
The music policy will be a mixture of disco, deep house and classic house, provided by 3 of Brighton's house music veterans...
Rich Harmer (Contraband Djs)
JACA (Beyond)
Chris Donovan
PLUS A LATE NIGHT SET FROM DISCO DEVIANT - Pablo Contraband
Expect quality music, friendly people and a lovely space to dance in the new year.
Entry is FREE ALL NIGHT, but capacity is very limited, so please get your names across to contrabanddjs@gmail.com to guarantee entry.
This is a free party, so you can save your hard earned cash for the booze.
Kicking off at 10pm...til 4am +

Local Zero's Christmas Cracker
Well once again christmas is almost upon us & soon the nights will start to shorten. With the theme of relaxing nights in with family & friends I've put together a mix of some beautiful songs & super sub 96 BPM slo-mo numbers that have made 2010 another great year for music. So cheers to 2010 & looking forward to 2011. Plenty to look forward to including the incredible Andrew Weatherall in April & the return of the legendary Greg Wilson in February. xxx

We had a blast signing and dancing, there were people of all ages in the choir and audience and the event really unified the crowd. Audience participation was wholeheartedly encouraged, the band were superb, tight and funky all night.

Southsea Brothers in arms - C.O.R - Boxing Day Beano and Free Album
Also amongst their ranks are a crew of music obsessives and DJ's collectively known as Civilisation of the Rough - COR for short. Between them they own some fine records, have partied with the best of them and generally keep the fire burning. The COR Parties have had some brilliant bookings (a few mirrored our tastes exactly here at DD) with Greg Wilson, Alfredo, Bill Brewster, Diesel and Michael Cook all having played for them.
Their next party is on Boxing Day and features another canny booking, Dave Jarvis (Faith) will join them and no doubt smash the floor. A founder of Faith Fanzine and the associated nights that have been an integral part of the dance scene and British club culture for 20 years.
I recommend checking the website out as it's jam packed with details of what the COR guys are all about and where & when the parties they throw will be.

They are a kindly collective and seeing as it's the season of giving they have supplied us with a couple of pressies. One is a mix by Mark Persaud linked to a new project they have, a night called caberet voltaire.
Again the selection on here is excellent and features a handful of tracks from 89 to now, I would and do play all of them so hat's off.

Not satisfied with that? Well they've spoiled us here so fear not you greedy lot. They put an album together a while ago and dished 100 copies out to their crowd at the launch party. This is the retrospective studio mix album of COR's best dancefloor 'moments', sequenced in Ableton and Cubase with a few disco sprinkles and cheeky edits chopped in for good measure. Each of the 7 residents chose their best tracks and Leon Windsor took them into the studio to try to glue them into a coherent whole. They gave 100 copies away in September, complete with beautiful artwork, sleeve notes etc. Here it is in free download version. Hope you like it.
The Civilisation of the Rough - COR Moments Album by Leon Windsor
There you go that's a fair bit of love from the COR camp, however if you dig a bit deeper on Leon's SC page there are a couple of edits also up for grabs.
If you like what you hear you will be pleased to know I'm thinking of getting a couple of them down to play for DD in Brighton early 2011 so watch this space.

Bust it - Finn (Barcelona), Black Lodge & Pablo, Smugglers Friday 3rd December
The Groovers 'Chicken Noodles' (The Groovers Deluxe mix) by The Groovers
Finn has been spinning his unique blend of deep, syncopated house for getting on 18years, never for the kudos, only ever for the love of the music. From the now mythical free-parties in the UK to the beaches of Barcelona, from below the Golden Gate to the shores of Yucatan and all points between looking for and usually finding the right vibe.
After swapping in '95 the charms of Bristol for San Francisco in 1996 he founded seminal deephouse label imperial Dub recordings with the mighty Dubtribe Sound System and Corey Black, touring Europe, North America and Mexico. Since 2004 he has been an integral part of Barcelona's house scene. For the last two years he has been producing again as The Groovers with Steve Ferrand
Black Lodge needs no introduction from us, he's gaining quite a rep on the disco scene both here and overseas, mainly due to his somewhat prolific output of originals, remixes and edits - he's been released on some great labels now, including Under the shade, dikso, traveller and featured on Future Balearica comp. More to come.
Check him out on SoundCloud here: LINK

Looking forward to this one - it's an early session running from 9-1am, in a nice bar with great sound, pool tables and plenty of comfort.

New Gig - Friday nights, Smugglers, Ship Street, Brighton
Playing Thursday - Sunday in Brighton. Few different flavours as each gig has it's own character.
Thursday nights are usually fairly laid back with a few customers and a through flow of students drinking and chatting in the bars I play so it gives me the chance to try out new stuff and play bits I wouldn't risk elsewhere. I normally play Easy Bar on Cranborne Street with one of my DJ friends joining me for the session, however I'm at another bar with a decent sound system this week, Smugglers on Ship street. It has had a bit of a tough time due to the fact it is mainly known as sports bar with a chavvy clientele at the weekends.
This isn't entirely untrue but they have recently employed our services as DJ's and we are now enjoying residencies there, Fridays are the night with the most scope. Pablo Contraband, Tim Rivers (The Acid House, Warm Sounds) and Jeff Daniels (Dedicated player) are on rotation, playing the best in bar grooves, soul, funk, disco and house. The place is not very busy at present so we've been given a blank canvas to play with on Fridays. I'm all for branding it as ours and getting the most out of the superb soundsystem (best bar rig I've played on in town) and attracting some friends and heads in.
Bar prices are reasonable and the big screen sports are switched off before we drop a beat. Be a nice one to turn around.
Saturdays there are a different animal with a more commercial vibe, it does get busy and the punters want to party, not a bad thing but musically predictable and mainstream so not one for the music lover. Always lots of women so it is a good place to head if you are on the pull.
On Sunday I'm playing at one of our secret parties, its a daytime affair starting at 3pm and running til 11.30pm (it is a school night ) - the rooftop do's we threw over the summer were so so good, everyone was feeling it and we had a brilliant crowd of lovely people. This promises to be as good. Here's a sneak peek odf the kind of tracks I'm leaning toward for this party. If you fancy it you will need to email guest list requests to : contrabanddjs@gmail.com - we'll send venue details out on Saturday afternoon.

Secret Venue for another Sunday bash October 31st Brighton
We have just confirmed a great venue in Brighton for another of our guest list only Secret Parties. It's not gonna be possible to do anything open air in Autumn / Winter, but the idea of not having another bash until May was a bit disappointing too quite a few of you.
Fortunately we have persuaded a venue to let us have one of our parties there on Sunday 31st October. It really is a stunning spot with great views and a unique feeling to it. We would have left it until the warmer weather but this space really made it irresistible.
It will be another guest list only affair, for friends and their friends only. Get your requests in by emailing contrabanddjs@gmail.com. The venue will be announced on the eve of the party via email.
Here's a mix from Rich on the deep house tip - he was outstanding on the rooftop in August so looking forward to some more of that.

Disco Deviant Terrace Party, Sat 28 August, Audio Brighton with Red Greg, Nick V, Ali Go Bnag and Pablo Contraband
Possibly the last Terrace Party from Disco Deviant for 2010, unless we get a late burst of summery weather in September...here's hoping.
Anyway to mark the occasion Disco Deviant have gone all out to make this one to remember. A truly sublime line up awaits you on the terrace this Saturday afternoon/evening.
Nick V is resident at Mona in Paris. He has established himself as a class act programming and DJing at some of the best nig...hts happening in the capital right now. His sets explore everything From Disco, R&B, Soul and Deep House.
Red Greg runs the waxdj website, plays at his own Ebonite parties in London & Paris, and jumps on the plane to NYC fairly regularly to play at Vinyl only affair Love Chant. Recently he's been busy compiling a compilation of 70's Disco and Boogie for Joey Negro's Z Records, and owns a vast collection of 70's and 80's rarities. Superb to have him here.
Pablo Contraband & Ali Go Bang have a long history of playing together in Brighton and beyond. Both share a love of Disco, House and Electrofunk. Recently they've both been busy with their own projects Disco Deviant & Go Bang Brighton, authoring their respective blogs and playing at festivals, notably Calabash @ Pride & Vintage.
It will be nice to have them playing together for us again on Saturday afternoon.
We kick off outside on the terrace at Audio from 3pm and there will be £3 pints and deals on jugs of Pimms & mojito's.
Free Entry, Good vibes, Excellent music. Come Along. AUDIO MARINE PARADE, BRIGHTON, 3-9pm

I gave it another whirl and imagined playing it and it working. I then decided to buy the wax which has arrived from Phonica this afternoon in time for a spin over the weekend.
We'll see what then crowd make of it, but for now what to you think?

RED GREG (Ebonite) now added to Terrace Party Line Up Sat Aug 28th Above Audio, Brighton.
Audio Terrace, Sat 28th August, Red Greg, Nick V (Mona Paris), Ali Go Bang & Pablo Contraband. 3pm -9pm FREE
He's been kind enough to put a bit of background biog together for us. Makes for an interesting read
'I grew up in East London and got my first taste of DJing around 1985 after gathering a few record and listening to tapes from local sound systems like Funkadelic Sound who were hugely influential and also mix tapes from Froggy (RIP) and Derek Boland who were both DJs at my local night club Bentleys in Canning Town.
Shortly after I started my own sound system with school friends and modified some second hand turntables by adding stop/start and rotary pitch controls and learnt myself how to mix soul and hip hop. A few years later I found myself playing everything from street soul, funk, acid, rare groove, go-go and house, but I never got into disco until I met another local DJ Henderson Yearwood in 1988, who was true disco junkie and used to play all this underground disco that I had never heard or seen in my life, It was only then that my love for 70s,80s Disco/Boogie grew, as well as my record collection and I started to play disco/boogie sets at various nights in London.
Then I backed off from DJing around 1998 for a few years but continued to collect records and in recent years started to DJ again, which led me to meet disco DJ Louis Heel at a London gig and a month or two later we launched our Ebonite disco night, which has been a roaring success and allows us to play all 70s disco and a touch of early 80s boogie.
I started to share mixes online a couple of years ago via my waxdj page http://waxdj.com/djs/28 that led to various promoters contacting me regarding gigs up and down the country and the opportunity to play alongside some great DJs and also gigs overseas and I've played a few times at my favourite underground NYC party 'Love Chant' which is an all vinyl affair, as well as great disco nights at Mona Paris, Club Sandwich Paris and it was an honour for Ebonite to give 70's disco back to the legendary Maxim's in Paris.
More recently I've been approached by Joey Negro for a future Disco/Boogie compilation on his Z Records label, so I've been busy digging deep into my records for lost gems and I've also started working on some edits for 12" release.
I'm looking forward to up coming gigs Back2Boogie at East Village, Vintage at Goodwood and of course the Disco Deviant Terrace Party at Audio on August 28.
We're also planning our next Ebonite party in London and looking forward to launching Ebonite in Paris this year.'
Also on the line up Are Nick V (Mona , Paris), Ali (Go Bang) & of course Pablo Contraband.
Local Zero's August Mix
Not made a mix for 7 weeks, which a record for me, so just threw together a bunch of (mainly vinyl) tracks I've been playing alot recently. The Session Victim track is a real favourite at the moment, as is the last track, a clever edit of UB40, rumoured to be by Mark E (the B side Kultra 2 is also dynamite)
Props to Session Victim, Stupid Human, Cosmic Boogie, InnerWestSoul, Ooft, Editanment, Hot Toddy & Leftside Wobble (Pablo played "Dub A Way" at the Greg Wilson gig a few weeks ago & it sounded INCREDIBLE!)
Didn't realise half the tracks had "Love" in the title until after, hence "Too Much Love"
1. Session Victim – Move Me So [Retreat 06]
2. Cosmic Boogie - Talk To Me [Bedmo Disco]
3. Melba Moore – Love's Comin' At Ya (Ooft Remix)
4. Tiger & Woods - Love In Cambodgia [Editainment]
5. Leftside Wobble – Dub A Way [Autodiscotheque]
6. War –Youngblood (Cosmic Boogie's You Don't Know Me Edit)
7. Stupid Human - A Straight Ahead [Stupid Human]
8. Surface – Falling In Love (InnerWestSoul Edit)
9. Hot Toddy – Down To Love [Smoke N Mirrors]
10. Cleo & Patra - Pharaoh Love [Editainment]
11. Stupid Human - Ahh, You're Welcome [Stupid Human]
12. Slave – Feel My Love (InnerWestSoul Edit)
13. Kultra 1 [Kultra]

Vintage Festival - Highlights
Graeme Park did the decent thing and took us back to the late 80's - early 90's rave era. Lot's of great tracks and memories flooding back. The place was alive with lasers, scan lights and some serious dancing. Looked like MDMA was back in the bloodstream, rather than the moodier K & Coke that has tainted the atmosphere at a lot of clubs over the past decade or so.
Man of the match for the Saturday night was undoubtedly ANDREW WEATHERALL he absolutely outclassed the rest of the DJ's (no offense). He sounded as if he were playing on a different sound system. Complete control of the place, pitch perfect mixing and track selection. His WAV/Vinyl and EQing sounded so punchy and the subtle nuances shone through. I'm a bass and percussion freak so to hear the system come down in volume but expand in frequency's was a joy. We danced hard for hours in the Warehouse.
I played in the Roller Disco on Sunday along with Stevie Kotey, Disco Bloodbath & Joey Negro. Fellow Brightonian Kate Wildblood had played in there on Friday and said to expect some fun and games and the odd comedy wipeout. It sounded fab in there and the skaters certainly kept me entertained.
Other area's that appealed to me were the Soul Casino, very well put together, large carpeted room, sprung dance floor, talced, and some decent soul being played to a crowd beneath the glint of four mirror balls. It looked, felt and sounded authentic. Add to that the effort of the scenes dancers, and the punters who had decided to look the part and you were taken back the era.
Simon T and Colin Curtis stood out as classy selectors, Ian Dewhirst and Wayne Hemingway also did a fine job of packing the dance floor. Good fun and some serious tunes. No footage from this area which is a shame.
Let it Rock stage was really cool, 50's all the way, some brilliant rockabilly bands, jiving and post war fashion. Looked amazing when it got going in there. few movies below but not a great representation to be fair.
Overall I think this festival will really take off next year, as word gets round about this one. An inspired vision from Wayne Hemingway, some brilliant curating, creative input and hard work and general effort all round, made this a pleasure to be involved in. Big thanks to the best artist liaison going Maz Phiri she really is great at her job. Made our lives a lot easier and made me and my friends feel most welcome all weekend.
From a practical view point the toilets and showers were absolutely excellent all weekend, none of your jank portaloos, nice clean and flushable toilets made a big difference. Drinks were reasonably priced and there was a lot of varied entertainment all weekend. Fashion shows, art workshops, live bands (The Faces, Earth Wind & Fire, Heaven 17, Peter Hook doing his Joy Division thing) - I got to hang out with Noel Watson, A Guy Called Gerald, Greg Wilson, Norman Jay, Joey Negro & Cosmic Boogie. All in all I really enjoyed the whole thing.
Here's to next year (and hopefully being invited back!)

Here's one from a while back from The Revenge et al at OOFT. I like it, featured on a fair few mixes online and I've been known to give it the odd airing.

Disco Deviant August schedule and ting
OK this coming weekend is the first Vintage festival at Goodwood. The Line up is like a who's who of British DJ's and club nights. Happy to be playing the roller disco on Sunday afternoon (1.30pm) Hope to see a few of you over the weekend.
Rampling late Friday, Lowlife on the Saturday, Weatherall in the warehouse and Greg on Sunday are a few I plan to be at. Bands, workshops, fashion, movies and lots of DJ's to take in over the weekend. Take a closer look HERE
Pleased to have two great DJ's joining the ever growing list of Disco Deviant guests in August. Rob Acteson was one of the pioneers of the acid house scene in the late 80's and has been DJing professionally since the mid 80's. He's joining me for a Boogie set Above Audio on 20th Aug. His Classified nights are still going strong and he's a much loved figure on the underground scene. Rob can also be name checked in Last Night A DJ Saved My Life should you wish to check his pedigree.
Nick V is a resident at Mona in Paris and consistently pleases Parisian crowds there. We've got him over for a couple of slot's in Brighton over the Bank Holiday weekend, a firm favourite of my wife, looking forward to him treating us to his genre hopping sound. Friday 27th @ The Globe - Followed by a daytime party on the terrace at Audio on the Saturday 3-9pm.
I'll be guesting alongside Norman Jay at The Coalition on Fri 27th as part of his 30 years of Good Times night. Glad to get in on that later.
Finally we finish the weekend in style with a secret rooftop party in Hove - location is kept a secret. We run from 2.30-11.30pm and the vibe is second to none. Those in attendance in May will vouch for that. guest list only, email: contrabanddjs@gmail.com with names for guestlist. This party is for our friends and their friends only.
